Daman 2012 movie
"There are a lot of weird movies this summer," says director Nicholas Stoller, who features frat boys and a baby in "Neighbors." "Even the superhero movies are a little goofy. And there are so many R-rated comedies. It's going to be very funny."
Although the definition of "comedy film'' is imprecise, movie-ticket website Fandango.com identifies 20 summer films as "live-action comedies," twice last year's number. Senior correspondent Dave Karger calls it the cross-genre "Bridesmaids effect" after 2011's raunchy, $169.1 million hit starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. (McCarthy pops up again with the road-trip comedy "Tammy," and Wiig lends her voice to the animated "How to Train Your Dragon 2").
Indeed, even the mighty Transformers franchise experiences a comedic boost as the dark off-screen cloud of Shia LaBeouf has moved on after three movies. In its place is Mark Wahlberg jealously protecting his teenage daughter in "Transformers: Age of Extinction."
So whether you like your jokes to be crude, merry, subtle, sexy, family-style or blended with superhero action, there will be plenty to choose from in the months ahead. Here's a look at 10 movies that promise loads of laughs.
What's so funny? Rogen and Byrne are new parents whose tranquil life is disrupted by an Animal House-style fraternity moving in next door. Lewd high jinks follow. Add pot and beer. "This is a war movie, really," Stoller says. "At its core, it's old people and young people fighting each other."
What's so funny? MacFarlane aims to match the success of 2012's R-rated "Ted," which did an eye-opening $54 million in the weekend of its June debut. "West"s story of a cowardly farmer (MacFarlane) taking on a dreaded gunslinger (Neeson) emerged as the director watched cowboy movies while editing "Ted." "It's a highly romanticized period," MacFarlane says. "But if you're not bored, you're in fear for your life. Everything out there wants to kill you."
What's so funny? "The Lego Movie" directors build on their 2012 hit "21 Jump Street," which paid goofy respect to the original earnest 1980s TV drama. Undercover officers Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) now are operating down the street at a college. They're feeling the comedy heat, on-screen and off. "You don't want to have something like a sophomore slump in a band," Hill says.
What's so funny? The couples from the 2012 hit "Think Like a Man" are back, but this time in Vegas at a pre-wedding party. Meanwhile, Hart has exploded into one of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws. "But we didn't want to turn it into the Kevin show," Story says. "We wanted to make sure we brought the chemistry of all of these guys together from the first film."
