Nicholls was one of the first writers to use only non-fictional sources to explore feminist issues in a non-fiction novel, which she published in 1982. She is known for her research-based fiction which depicts feminism as both a social and historical phenomenon. Nicholls has been lauded by several critics as an early practitioner of post-feminist fiction, a subgenre of literary fiction which looks to dispel assumptions that feminism is dead, and to re-examine assumptions of gender, womanhood, masculinity, and cultural identity.
Nicholls' work spans several genres, including historical fiction, science fiction, political science, literary fiction and poetry. Nicholls herself has described her fictional writing as "historical novels set in the present". Her books include The Domestic Revolution (1984), followed by The Ruin of El Toboso (1992). The Ruin of El Toboso received the Women's Prize for Fiction and The Finishing School (1997), her second historical novel, won the Whitbread Book Award.
In addition, Nicholls wrote non-fiction books including No Pity (1980), which looks at psychological aspects of women's experience in the 20th Century, and The Warrior's Heart (1985), a study of the life and ideas of Florence Nightingale. She also has written science fiction and fantasy, including The Goddess of Atropos (1995), which was set in Ancient Greece.
In an interview with a literary journal, she mentioned that her work, "the writing of fiction, is profoundly and selfishly a ritual". Nicholls has said that although she is aware of how difficult it is to write fiction, she keeps on doing it because she does enjoy it.
